It’s all crazy, all the time over here. I just got home a little while ago from the animal shelter with some exciting news! Meet the newest little foster-member of my family:

He’s only 3-4 weeks old and he was going to be euthanized since they don’t have anyone to give him the care he needs. A classmate and I are co-fostering him for the next couple weeks, so he’ll get to come to class with us and get another shot at being adopted in a couple weeks when he is healthier. He needs a name so feel free to comment with ideas!

Other than school stuff, I have been getting back into the running swing of things. I got in three 3-mile runs last week and I just finished my first 3-miler of this week. I’m trying to build my base back up before I start marathon training in a month and a half. I haven’t made it to Crossfit yet this week (boo for getting done with emergency rotation at 2am) but I’m hoping to go tomorrow at 5am.

Back to watching Olympic gymnastics!

Track etiquette

Crazy weird fun day today!

I met a friend at the gym since it was bring-a-friend Thursday. It was nice to have a buddy for once (not that the people at the gym aren’t nice), and we had a fun time :) .

The first 20 minutes of the workout was skill work on handstands/handstand push ups. I haven’t ever been able to get up on the wall by myself, and my friend wasn’t so keen on it either. She helped toss my legs up on the wall a couple times, but we really weren’t making any progress. Coach Sara came over and told us to try putting our heads on the ground and doing headstands just to get more comfortable being upside down. It was the best advice ever! It was actually really easy for me to get up in a headstand, although I couldn’t get up in a handstand from there. Progress is progress though!

Today’s WOD:
5 rounds:
200m run
12 pullups – I used a big band
18 box jumps @ 18″

I finished in 14:25, my friend had to modify a little more but she still finished the workout. It was all very chill (we still sweated like crazy) and it was honestly one of my favorite days at Crossfit. There wasn’t any of the over-competitiveness that I hate, and we chatted with some of the women after the workout who are pretty awesome. I wish my schedule wasn’t changing next week so I could keep going to the 8:30am class! I <3 them!

After class I got home and took a nap for a couple hours with the pup. I was still wiped from being at school until 12:45am and not getting to bed until almost 2am.

This afternoon I headed up to the rec and pounded out my 3 miles on the track in the AC. I was still soaked afterwards, so it must have been warmer inside than I thought. I think I ran it in something a little over 24 minutes, which isn't terrible.

My biggest pet peeve with running at the rec is track etiquette. So many people walk straight down the middle of the track right in the way of all the people trying to run. I also dislike the girls (and rarely guys) who sprint past me for half a lap or maybe an entire lap just to prove how fast they are, and then quit. I swear people come to the rec just to run a quarter mile and then go home. It’s ridiculous how many people I saw get on and off the track during my 12 laps.

Oh well. Anyway, I’m headed home now and unless the plan changes I’m going to have a quiet night catching up on cleaning my house (it’s SO BAD) and reading some fun books.

Anyone read anything good lately?

To the god of WODs

Thank you, thank you, thank you whoever does the programming at our gym! I totally redeemed myself today! My form might have sucked and I might have felt like I was running through quicksand, but I finished the workout successfully in pretty good time.

Today’s LIFT: 5×5 back squat – I did 95lbs.

Today’s WOD:
3 rounds:
400m run
8 split snatch @ 45lbs
7 bar muscle ups – I did banded pullups

I finished the workout in 10:25, which I felt really good about. Any WOD with running generally goes well for me, although I hate WODs that have technical lifting in them. I like to keep my cardio and my lifting separate :)

In school news, last night was my first evening working the 5pm to midnight shift, and it was pretty easy. We had a colic come in so I was busy from 10 to about midnight, and it definitely helped pass the time. Other than a biting, kicking horse and an irate mama cow, we had a fairly uneventful evening.

I’m going to try to do an eats update later, but for now I’ll leave you with this, since it pretty much sums up yesterday:

WOD fail

After Jordan left yesterday evening (sad day :( ), I headed to my friend Amy’s apartment and we had a nice evening drinking wine and chatting about school and life in general. It was a good way to cheer up and was long overdue.

In other news, today’s workout kicked my butt and I totally failed at it. We started with a 2 minute AMRAP warmup of push presses at 45#. I only got 32, it was an arm burner. After that we did 5×5 overhead squats. I went light and stuck with the 45# so I could work on my form. I really struggle with those. Then we did two WODs, the first being a 5 minute AMRAP of 30 double unders and 9 toes to bar (I did 60 singles and knee ups) and the second was 2 rounds of 20 front squats and 25 burpees. I started at 85# and almost died, the front squats took me forever. Unfortunately I didn’t finish in under 12 minutes, which was the cutoff for the workout. I was 5 burpees short and I felt like a huge failure :( .

After the gym I went to the grocery store. I somehow always wind up going to the store after workouts, and I feel like I need to walk around with a disclaimer saying “I’m sorry I’m dirty.” I have literally never been dirtier than I am when I’m covered in sweat and that icky black grime from the mats in the gym. Here are the spoils from my trip:

Here’s the most awesome thing I found:

Prepackaged Parmesan bites! Holy cow! I’m surprised there wasn’t a sparkling flashing arrow pointing me straight to them :)

At home now with my puppy, who is in heat as of yesterday and is wearing her superhero pants for the occasion.

We’re going to hang out for a little bit and then it’s off to school for my 5pm to midnight shift!

Tonight is my last night of the midnight to 8am shift! It feels like I’ve been so out of the normal loop for days and days.

I’m pretty happy with myself for getting to the gym for 5 workouts last week in addition to running 3 days. Hopefully I can keep up my good exercising streak. My eating, on the other hand, has been miserable. I have eaten so much food during the nights because I get tired and get the munchies, in addition to having Jordan come visit (which inevitably leads to poor eating).

In any case, I’m going to focus on the positive and make sure I eat better this week. I have been really excited the past couple of days because Jordan has been in town and we have been having a really good time :) . We ran around town this weekend just window shopping and hanging out, and we’ve gone out to eat a couple times. He’s leaving tonight which bums me out, but I have really REALLY enjoyed having him back for the weekend. I miss him like crazy most of the time.

Almost done with this shift and then I get to go home and sleep! Counting down the minutes…

Working the overnight shift is weird and awesome. I’ve been working from 12am to 8am, and then sleeping through the morning until mid to late afternoon.

The best things about working overnight:

  • Working out whenever I feel like it
  • Being able to go to stores that aren’t usually open during the hours I’m off school
  • Spending lots of snuggle time with the puppy

Worst things about working overnight:

  • I hate sleeping during the day, it makes me feel like a lazy bum
  • Eating tons of food to keep myself awake at night
  • Killing time because there is absolutely NOTHING to do between 9pm and 12am (I realize that recreational drinking usually falls into this time frame, but since it’s not really appropriate to show up to my shift totally hammered I have been avoiding this option)

I had last night off, so I stayed up until about midnight and then slept in a bit so I hopefully won’t mess my schedule up too badly. I’ve been fairly productive today, which feels good :) . I had a green monster shake for breakfast, and then ran off to the 12pm class at the gym. Today was pretty easy, 6 rounds of 250m row with 1 minute rest in between. My fastest row was 54.8 and slowest was 59.1. After the gym I went to Home Depot, still looking for a cactus to get for Jordan. Make that cacti. I want to get a big planter and fill it full of them so he can have an exciting plant for his house that hopefully won’t be too easy to kill. I’m also considering some lucky bamboo. After Home Depot I ran to Target, because let’s be honest, I can hardly go a day without stopping by at least once. I came home and had the end of the potato and corn soup I made a few days ago for lunch. I did laundry, laid out in the sun for about an hour (I’m hoping to cure my pasty whiteness), and now I’m about to take the pup to the park before going to see the new Batman movie with some friends.
